Prices for the Beaver Hall Group paintings are rising and more and more frequently outdoing those of their contemporaries, the Group of Seven. Cases in point are Henrietta May's "Near Baie-Saint-Paul" and "Afternoon Picnic" ( 187,200 each), as well as Emily Coonan's "Still Life" (52,650) all sold last night at the Heffel auction. Then there was Randolph Hewton's "Semi-Draped Nude" (153,400) sold Monday night at Joyner's.
Many of the quality works, if not in museums, are..... Comments

If you think you have found a long-lost Leonardo da Vinci, a Jackson Pollock or even a Canadian Goodrich Roberts at your local flea market, you might be advised to read David Grann's article "The Mark of a Masterpiece" in the July 12 & 19th edition of The New Yorker.
Grann's research sorts out the difficult business of art authentication and its potential for fraud. More interestingly he takes us to Montreal where Peter Paul Biro a "Canadian forensic art expert" has developed fingerprint ide..... Comments

Recently, at the New York MOMA show, "Bauhaus 1919-1933: Workshops for Modernity", I was struck by the similarities between Oskar Schlemmer's "Bauhaus Stairway" (1932) and "Tenants"(1940), a painting I remembered by Canadian Marian Dale Scott. Upon returning home and doing a bit of research, I found the likenesses between many of Scott's works and those of her contemporaries quite remarkable. I see Modigliani  ..... Comments

The season of Canadian Art auctions is about to begin. Today, November 7, 2009, Walker's of Ottawa held a preview of selected works for sale at the Park Hyatt in Toronto. For the second year now, they, like Heffel's, are holding previews in several cities. So far Joyner's and Sotheby's are staying close to home showing in Toronto only. Joining the fun are several galleries --- Klinkhoff (Montreal), Masters (Calgary), Mayberry (Winnipeg) --- who are holding exhibition sales of historic..... Comments

"Michael Dunn, Canadian Art Collector" by elw on October 2, 2009, 9:18 am, in category General

Calvin Tomkins' article, "Windfalls Mr. MOMA", in The New Yorker (Oct.5,2009) provides interesting details to the Michael Dunn story. Dunn's extensive collection of Canadian art, especially of the Beaver Hall Group, made news upon his sudden death in 2007 when it was put up for auction at Sotheby's. We now learn that he has left his estate of over ten and a half million dollars to New York's Museum of Modern Art. Unfortunately, the dis-enchanted Quebecer decided to by-pass our Canadia..... "What's in a name?" by elw on September 14, 2009, 6:54 pm, in category General

Is it the "Beaver Hall Group" or the "Beaver Hall Hill Group"? The confusion dates back to 1966 when the National Gallery of Canada mistakenly titled its one and only major show by the group "The Beaver Hall Hill Group". Reviews of their very first exhibition including interviews with A Y Jackson in both The Gazette (January 18, 1921) and La Presse (jeudi,le 20 Janvier, 1921) clearly refer to the "Beaver Hall Group" or "Le Groupe Beaver Hall". Easy enough to make the mistak..... Comments

You might want to tune in to BNN (Business News Network) on July 29,2009 at 7pm, to hear what David Silcox of Sotheby's and Robert Heffel of Heffel Fine Art have to say about investing in Canadian art. Market Call host, Howard Green, will take your questions by telephone at 1-877-667-6299 or by email at marketcall@bnn.ca. Let's see if there are any bargains to be had given the recent recession. If you are thinking of buying art at a Canadian auction, you might want to consider Heffel Auction House. Apart from their record sales and prices, my recent experience in absentee bidding confirmed that they are indeed top-notch in all respects. While telephone bidding can be a bit harrowing for the novice, it was clear from the beginning that Heffel strives to make this an efficient and pleasant experience. Once registered, you will receive a friendly call about an hour before, just..... Comments
